The past few weeks I’ve shown you inside some of the most popular email service providers. so that you can get an idea for which one might be the best fit for your business. If you missed that series, you can find the first article here.

Choosing an email service is first important decision you’ll make as an online business owner. It’s also the first place you need to consider price, available options, and how you plan to grow your business in the future.

For years I recommended MailChimp. It has a free option for small lists and an interface that appeals to a lot of people. But as I work with more businesses launching online courses and memberships, I no longer believe it’s a good option for people who are list building so they can launch.

Here’s why:

Don’t get me wrong, I still believe MailChimp is a great service for other types of people who send out newsletters or blogs, but for launching I don’t think it fits the bill.

    Hi Tracy,
    You mentioned in the MailChimp video that you will lose subscribers when you migrate a list from one service to another. Why does that happen? Do they not transfer correctly or does the new service cause people to unsubscribe? Thanks!

      Hi Andrea, good question.

      The reality is that when you migrate email services, there are a certain number of addresses that just don’t migrate properly. Maybe it’s no longer a valid email address, maybe it wasn’t valid in the first place. Some email service providers will make them re-subscribe. There may be a filter that catches the email on the other end (the subscriber’s end) that will make the address bounce. There are a variety of reasons. It isn’t usually a big deal, but you will lose a few. If you’ve been careful to not add people to your list who haven’t given permission, periodically remove people who aren’t engaging (or having your current email service do that for you), and are otherwise practicing good list hygiene, you won’t notice a huge decrease.
