Why is Building an Online Business so Hard?

General, List Building

If you’ve ever traveled in the southeastern United States, you can’t miss the crazy marketing campaign for an 80 year old landmark.

Signs, barn roofs and even mailboxes order you to See Rock City!

A few months back, I finally succumbed to the marketing and found one of the most delightfully kitschy attractions I’ve seen in my entire life. I loved it.

And although I won’t give you all the details here, because a big part of the delight is not knowing what it is, or what to expect, there was one very clear theme that popped out at me during our time there.

Rock City was built in the 1930s. That makes it all the more wondrous to me. And to tour it, you need to stay on a very narrow path. As you walk along you see some really cool things, but you also see other paths. Paths above you, paths to the right, paths to the left. But you can’t get to those paths. And you think to yourself. How do I get there? I want to be up there! I bet you can see some really amazing things from over on that trail. But all you can do is stay on your own path.

And as you’re wandering around and exploring, before you know it, you’re on the path you saw just minutes before that you didn’t know how to reach. And now you look back at the path you just came from and you think, “Wow! This is cool up here, but it’s even cooler to look back to see where I just came from.”

About halfway through our time there, I realized how much following the path related to my own ideas about building an online business. Never content to enjoy where I’m at, I’m always wanting to  be up there or wonder what I can see from that direction.

That’s how it is with online business. There are so many different avenues to explore. So many social media channels to play on, so many different services to investigate, so many different courses to take that it becomes really easy to lose focus for where we are right now and to maximize our time and our resources in the business we have rather than trying to constantly strive to become the business we want.

In today’s video, I’ll talk about this a bit more, including the biggest pitfalls I see online entrepreneurs making when setting up their online businesses. These pitfalls are the reason so many give up before they make it to the finish line and discover success.

What about you? Where do you find yourself distracted in your online business? What are the pathways you’re going down right this minute that are leading you astray and how will you get back on track? I’d love to hear about it in the comments below.
